Deter Weeds and Grass on the Landscape With Pine Straw
Pine Straw offers superior bedding material for your trees and plants. It is a natural product that is high in nitrogen and as it decomposes it makes a great fertilizer for plants and shrubs. Get your batch from Nature's Supply Centre.
Using Pine Straw as mulch adds beauty to your landscape while deterring weeds and grass. It is naturally insect and rodent free, adheres well to slopes, and will not wash away during heavy rain. Pine straw does not need to be removed when old. Simply place fresh straw on top of existing straw to revitalize the color and to add bulk.
Why Use Pine Straw?
There are many reasons for using pine straw as a mulch.
- Pine Straw enhances the beauty of any landscape by providing a cover of uniform color that is neutral and non-detracting to plants
- It helps to conserve soil moisture by reducing water evaporation from the soil
- It provides natural weed and grass deterrent when the straw is applied deep enough, about two to three inches, to smother unwanted weeds and plants
- It's needles naturally interlock and create a “blanket” effect which keeps wind and rain from washing or blowing away the topsoil
- Pine Straw prevents the soil from hardening so moisture is able to reach the roots of plants
- It insulates the soil as a great early spring gardening technique to warm the soil for early planting
- As it decomposes it disintegrates into additional nutrients for your plants or shrubs
